Happy Sunday ☕️. I’m introducing three new things today based on our chats and your feedback last week. First, the first Sunday Scroll of the month is now FREE to all subscribers (this one!). Subsequent SSs throughout the month will be for paid subscribers. Second, occasionally — at the end our Sunday Scroll emails, you will find a new section entitled Words to Make You Think. If you’re in the mood for some deep content and articles that cover important real-word topics, you’ll enjoy this section. If life is too heavy this week and you just want cute animal pictures at the top of this email plus some interesting links… skip over it. Take what you need here and leave the rest. I will do my best to add a “TW” if any content in this particular section needs a trigger warning.
Third, BOOK CLUB! You guys. We have had book clubs a hundred different ways online over the years and I finally figured out the best way to do it: the way that feels the most natural. I’ll announce a book (first up: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett!). We’ll read it at our own pace. When I finish it, I’ll share my thoughts in a Sunday Scroll. You can comment and share your thoughts and we’ll keep the conversations going there! There is no schedule, we’re just going go with the flow. If you’re not ready to read my (or anyone commenting’s) review when the post goes up, just save it for another day.
Ok! That’s it for Substack house keeping. Have I mentioned that I love this little space on the web so much. SO MUCH. It’s brought a lot of creativity back into my heart and my brain and for that, I am so grateful. To you… I am so grateful. Thank you for supporting me and this.
Now, how about some Sunday Scrolling…
The Girlfriend’s podcast. A new true crime podcast that has so many people I follow in IG obsessed! Sign me up.
Elizabeth Gilbert is on Substack! A prolific writer. You may know her from a zillion things she’s written (Big Magic and Eat, Pray, Love to name a few). She is a legend and she is a brilliant writer.
80+ Etsy finds to help you decorate for Fall (The Everygirl).
Bad Cook, Great Mom (Cup of Jo). I’ve never related to anything more.
Dare you not to cry. Chris Stapleton covers I Hope You Dance on TikTok. He hasn’t released it as a single or a cover yet. But I’m hoping he will.
Smart Brevity (by Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen, and Roy Schwartz, the co-creators of Axios and Politico). I’m currently reading this book and it’s an amazing resource for writers of any sort.
The Era’s Tour Heads to the Big Screen (NPR). You know this had to be included this week! Ticket prices are $19.89 and $13.13… of course. I’m going with my girlfriends and their kids and then taking my parents the next day. I told my dad to get his sequins and glitter ready!!
What No One Tells You About the Big College Drop-Off (Charter, in partnership with Time). One woman’s thoughts on saying goodbye (over and over) and allowing your kids to struggle as they become adults.
The Greatest Showman Table Read. If you haven’t seen this and you love broadway and you love The Greatest Showman, get ready. I cannot NOT get full body goosebumps and a lump in my throat every time I watch this video. Kelea Settle (who sings This is Me) was nervous to even get out from behind the podium… until the teamwork and her power took over. You can literally SEE it blossom in her about 2 minutes in. You’re not even ready for this video. I’m sorry I keep making you cry today. I worry I missed my calling in life and was supposed to be in theater sometimes… 🥹
Which Era Are You In? (from @coupdegracefarris on IG). I’m “library holds” for sure.
Words To Make You Think:
She Just Had a Baby. She’s Now a Mom. Soon She’ll Start Seventh Grade. (Time.com). TW: mentions of rape and abortion.
ICYMI from Simplified:
LABOR DAY SALE! 25% off e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. We’re going with a work hard, play hard theme, so use code SAVEHARD25 to shop.
Fall Things We’ve Bought and Loved on the podcast!
Launch Day might be 9/13, but some really fun giveaways (and more!) start Tuesday, 9/5!
This week on Substack:
Also, don’t miss our chat where we shared one boring thing about ourselves. This is hysterical! Hope you all have a wonderful week!
xo,
Emily

Just listened to the recent podcast episode and am on the hunt for the chili recipe Laura and Liz rave about! I don’t see it in the show notes. Will you share it or let me know where to find it? Thank you! Love your content!
I’ve watched that video so, so many times over the years! It’s the best
